Our Safeguarding and Child Protection Policies

How can you become a Nursery Practitioner?

Becoming a Nursery Practitioner can be achieved in many ways, including gaining qualifications through colleges, courses, or even apprenticeships - sometimes even just having some experience can get you in the door! It is still possible to work in childcare without a qualification as an Unqualified Nursery Nurse Assistant, with the right experience and passion for the career, and under the right circumstances.

Nursery staff need to be trusted, knowledgeable, and interactive - but this is all learned with practice, patience, and time as a career progresses. The best way to become a practitioner is to demonstrate passion for working within the early years sector, and to expand professional development practices through gained experience, education, and enthusiasm to reach your goals.

Recognised ways to becoming a qualified Nursery Practitioner can include;

  • Volunteering.

  • Work Experience.

  • Gaining a Level 2 qualification in Childcare, for entry-level roles such as a Nursery Assistant, Preschool Assistant, or Childminder Assistant.

  • Gaining a Level 3 in The Early Years Work Force or a Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification.

  • Gaining a NVQ Level 3 qualification in Children's Care, Learning and Development.

  • Gaining a BTEC National Diploma in Children's Care, Learning and Development.

These courses can be taken at local colleges, and through apprenticeships in early years settings - the type of qualification taken depends on the person's preferences, and experiences.

What career progressions can childcare offer?

We at Scribbles aim to ensure career progression, tailored to our team's interests, needs, and experiences - from room leads, managers, to SENCO roles - we want to build our staff's skills and encourage growth, learning, and passion, not only in our children, but our staff too!

Starting a career in early years can help to progress into a number of sectors, roles, and specialisms such as;

  • Room lead.

  • Nursery management.

  • Support roles in schools.

  • Special educational needs coordinator (SENCO).

  • Physical activity and nutrition coordinator (PANCO).

  • Local authority roles.

  • Educators/ Lecturers.

  • Childminding.

Free Learning Resources and Courses

The internet offers many learning resources, some funded, paid, or even free! Online learning is a great way to make yourself stand out when applying for work experience, apprenticeships, or even just when wanting to learn something new and expand your knowledge.

There is a free informational training course ran by the Department of Education (DoE) , giving an overview of child development, and offers practical advice for supporting children in early years settings. This training combines theory, practical advice, and offers a certificate of completion for those already working in childcare, or in training.

The Department of Education (DoE) also offers multiple free Prevent Duty training courses at varying levels from beginners to safeguarding leads, offering knowledge, and how to support those susceptible for radicalisation. The Virtual College also offers a free online safeguarding course for Recognising and Preventing Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

More information can be found here;

If you are aged 19 or over, you may meet the criteria for a fully-funded government course to achieve a Level 2 of your choice, which isn't limited to just childcare! Childcare courses that can be undertaken include:
